LTO tape backup – long-term data archiving

LTO tape backup is a proven solution for long-term data archiving. Tapes offer low storage costs and excellent protection against ransomware thanks to physical isolation.

What is LTO tape backup?

LTO (Linear Tape-Open) is a magnetic tape technology used for data backup and archiving for over 20 years. LTO tapes offer the lowest storage cost per GB, longevity (30+ years), and natural ransomware protection through the ability to physically disconnect from the network (air-gap). It’s the ideal solution for regulatory-compliant archiving.

How does LTO tape backup work?

  • 1 analysis of archiving and regulatory requirements
  • 2 Configuration of retention policies and schedules
  • 3 Automated data backup to LTO tapes in our Data Center
  • 4 Data integrity verification after writing
  • 5 Professional tape storage
  • 6 Optional storage of copies at a second location
  • 7 Cataloging and managing the lifecycle of tapes

Benefits of LTO tape backup

  • Lowest long-term storage cost
  • Air-gap protection – natural protection against ransomware
  • 30+ year tape lifespan
  • Compliance with regulations (GDPR, NIS2, UKSC, KNF, archiving)
  • High capacity (LTO-8: 12TB native, 30TB compressed)
  • WORM (Write Once Read Many) for immutability

Tape archive security

LTO tapes offer unique security: physical isolation from the network (air-gap) makes them resistant to cyberattacks. Backups stored on tapes can be encrypted. WORM tapes ensure immutability – ideal for regulatory compliance. Storage in appropriate facilities with access control guarantees physical security.

How do we manage LTO tapes?

Each client receives dedicated LTO media purchased exclusively for their needs. We do not share tapes between different clients, thus guaranteeing complete data separation. The tapes are stored in an appropriate location, in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations, in our Data Center in Poland. This ensures they retain their durability and reliability for many years. We offer delivery of tapes to the client’s specified address, allowing the archive to be stored at their own location or in a safe.

Did you know?

  • 1 We offer flexible LTO tape backup models: one-time backup, weekly, monthly or quarterly subscription, as well as a tape rotation model.
  • 2 An LTO-8 tape can store up to 30TB of data (with compression) – that's equivalent to around 6 million high-resolution photos!
  • 3 LTO technology has been developed by a consortium of HP, IBM and Quantum since 2000 and remains the archiving standard in the largest corporations.
  • 4 The cost of storing 1TB of data on LTO tapes is up to 10x lower than on hard drives, with significantly longer media lifespan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Manufacturers guarantee LTO tape lifespan for a minimum of 30 years when stored properly.

Recovery time depends on the amount of data. For typical requests (individual files/folders), data is available within a few hours. Full restoration of large archives may take up to 24h.

Yes, tapes stored offline (air-gap) are completely protected from cyberattacks. Ransomware cannot encrypt media that is not connected to the network.

Currently, we offer LTO-8 tape backup, providing up to 30TB of capacity.
