Over the last 12 months, 76% of companies have been attacked by ransomware.
Although cybersecurity has been discussed more and more in recent years, unfortunately, companies still face major problems in ensuring the stability of their systems. According to the Veeam Data Protection Trends 2022 report, as many as 76% of businesses were attacked by ransomware at least once over the last 12 months. A positive signal from the report is that the vast majority of IT directors plan to increase their budgets for information technology aimed at improving digital security.
Veeam Data Protection Trends 2022 Report
The Veeam report is one of the most highly regarded reports in the industry. This year’s edition is the largest study of its kind, examining how companies are preparing for new challenges related to cyber threats. Veeam is an undisputed leader in backup and storage solutions, as well as modern data protection mechanisms. In its report, the company included responses from more than three thousand senior-level employees responsible for implementing digital security solutions in companies with a global reach. The goal behind creating the report is to verify what strategies companies plan to implement to effectively protect data, as well as how they perceive the dangers associated with cyberattacks. The survey also asked whether companies plan to implement cloud services for protecting critical data and other modern strategies aimed at improving security.
Cyberattacks becoming increasingly dangerous
The majority of respondents confirmed that the companies they work for are not maximally effective at securing data and ensuring business continuity. Surprisingly harmful in the eyes of respondents were primarily cyberattacks, which pose a real threat to the security of organizations. Although less common than downtime and failures resulting from negligence, they have much more serious long-term consequences. As in the previous year, cyberattacks are the most common cause of disruptions to company operations. Over the last 12 months, as many as 76% of surveyed companies experienced at least one ransomware attack (23% of companies recorded 2 attacks). Unfortunately, on average, 36% of data encrypted as a result of an attack could not be recovered. This clearly indicates the need to optimize data protection measures, as well as the necessity of regularly creating backups. The report’s findings show that the protection methods currently in use are not sufficiently effective. Most attacks originated from malicious websites and infected links, as well as from compromised system login credentials. The report shows that almost 90% of companies do not have sufficient data protection mechanisms.
What else was included in the report
The Veeam report highlights the importance of cloud solutions in terms of data protection. Solutions such as DRaaS services are now necessary to ensure maximum security for company systems. Cloud-based DRaaS services were recognized by respondents as the most modern and innovative. The report also highlights the importance of human error – technical failures are the most common cause of downtime. Infrastructure-related outages affected more than half of respondents, while 46% mentioned configuration errors made by admins. Nearly half of businesses had to minimize losses related to the accidental deletion of data by users at least once. On average, 18% of company data was not covered by a backup procedure, while as many as 90% of respondents noticed a gap in service availability.
Veeam for protecting your company’s data
Year after year, companies are spending more money on protecting their own and their customers’ data. The need to implement modern data protection mechanisms is now crucial if you want to maximize the effectiveness of protection. Cloud is becoming the most widely used technology – the report shows that 67% of companies already include cloud solutions in their data protection strategy.
